Overview
Anthurium andraeanum is the flamingo flower — the most popular flowering tropical houseplant after orchids, growing 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) tall and 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) wide. Brilliant red waxy heart-shaped spathes (modified leaves) with a prominent yellow spadix — the iconic 'lacquered red heart' that has made Anthurium one of the world's most recognized tropical flowers. The 'flower' is NOT a flower: the colored spathe is a modified leaf; the actual tiny flowers are the bumps on the yellow spadix. Each spathe lasts 6–8 weeks and new ones emerge continuously with sufficient light — YEAR-ROUND flowering potential. The second most important tropical cut flower in the world (after orchids). Named after Édouard François André, the French botanist. Epiphytic in nature — grows on tree branches, needing airy, well-draining media (similar to orchids). Bright indirect light for continuous flowering. Toxic.
