Overview
Ammophila breviligulata is American beachgrass — the foundation grass of Atlantic coastal dune ecosystems, growing 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) tall and spreading indefinitely by deep rhizomes. The genus name Ammophila spp. means 'sand-loving'. Blue-green upright tough narrow leaves and golden-tan dense spike-like panicles in midsummer. This species literally builds sand dunes: the tough foliage traps windblown sand, the deep rhizome network (extending 6 feet / 180 cm or more) anchors the accumulated sand, and the buried stems produce new shoots through the deposited sand, raising the dune surface over time. A single planting can create measurable dune growth within 2–3 years. The species requires pure sand and full sun — it actually declines in fertile garden soil, becoming susceptible to disease. Not a garden ornamental in the traditional sense — this is a functional ecological engineer planted for dune stabilization and coastal restoration. Hardy to zone 3 (also native to Great Lakes shores). Deer avoid the tough foliage.
Native Range
Ammophila breviligulata is native to eastern North America — the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland south to North Carolina, and Great Lakes shores.Suggested Uses
Used exclusively for dune stabilization and coastal restoration. NOT a traditional garden ornamental — requires pure sand and declines in garden soil. The ecological foundation of Atlantic dune ecosystems. Critical for coastal storm protection. How to Identify
