    Umbellatus

    /um-bel-AH-tus/
    🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

    Also known as: umbellata, umbellatum

A floral arrangement epithet describing flowers arranged in an umbel — where all the individual flower stalks radiate from a single point at the top of the main stem, like the ribs of an umbrella. Umbels are characteristic of the carrot family (Apiaceae) but occur across many plant families. Appears as umbellatus (masculine), umbellata (feminine), or umbellatum (neuter).

    Etymology

From Latin umbella (a little shade, parasol, umbrella) + -atus (having), from umbra (shade).

    Example

Allium umbellatum and Primula umbellata both produce the distinctive single-point-radiating flower clusters that give the umbellate arrangement — and the entire family Apiaceae — their characteristic look.
