    An inflorescence in which flower stalks (pedicels) of roughly equal length arise from a single point at the tip of the main stem, creating a flat or rounded cluster resembling an umbrella. Umbels are the defining feature of the carrot family (Apiaceae) and are also common in the onion family. Compound umbels have secondary umbels (umbellets) arising from the main umbel branches.
