The enlarged terminal portion of a stamen that contains the pollen sacs (microsporangia). When mature, the anther dehisces (splits open) to release pollen grains for pollination.

Etymology

From Greek anthera, meaning "medicine extracted from a flower," from anthos (flower).

Example

Bees collect pollen from the exposed anthers as they visit each flower.
