Achene

🌸 Flower Parts Basic

An achene is a small, dry, one-seeded fruit that does not split open at maturity (indehiscent). The single seed is attached to the surrounding fruit wall (pericarp) at only one point, so the thin wall can be separated from the seed. Achenes are typical of the daisy and buttercup families; in many daisy-family plants the achene is topped by a tuft of hairs that aids wind dispersal, though in some genera this tuft is absent.
