Thinning Cut

Also known as: removal cut

A type of pruning cut that removes an entire branch back to its point of attachment (the branch collar) on the parent limb or trunk. Thinning cuts reduce density without stimulating excessive regrowth, maintain natural form, and are the preferred technique in proper arboriculture. Contrast with heading cuts.
