Cabling

/KAY-bling/
🌲 Arboriculture●● Intermediate

Also known as: tree cabling, cable support

Cabling is a supplemental support system where flexible steel or synthetic cables are installed between branches or stems to limit their movement relative to each other. Cables are typically installed at approximately two-thirds the distance from the crotch to the branch tips. Cabling does not correct structural defects but reduces the likelihood of failure by redistributing stress loads.

Etymology

From Old French cable (rope, cable) + -ing (action suffix)

Example

Dynamic cabling was installed in the historic oak to support its heavy lateral limbs over the playground.
