Branch Bark Ridge
/branch bark rij/🌲 Arboriculture●● Intermediate
Also known as: BBR, bark ridge
The branch bark ridge (BBR) is a visible line of raised bark tissue on the upper side of where a branch meets the trunk. It forms where the branch and trunk tissues push against each other during growth. The BBR is a critical landmark for proper pruning cuts — arborists cut just outside it to avoid damaging trunk tissue while maximizing the tree's ability to close the wound.
Etymology
From Old English braunc (branch) + Old Norse bǫrkr (bark) + Old English hrycg (ridge)
Example
“The arborist identified the branch bark ridge to determine the correct angle for the final pruning cut.”
