An individual segment of the calyx, the outermost whorl of a flower. Sepals are typically green and leaf-like, protecting the developing flower bud before it opens. Collectively, sepals form the calyx.

Etymology

From New Latin sepalum, possibly from Greek skepe (covering).

Example

The green sepals of a rose are visible at the base of the bloom.
