    The central axis of a compound leaf to which the leaflets are attached, or the main axis of an inflorescence. In a pinnate leaf, the rachis is the extension of the petiole beyond the first pair of leaflets.

    Etymology

    From Greek rhachis, meaning "spine, backbone."

    Example

    Fern fronds have a prominent rachis from which the pinnae radiate.
