A plumose structure is clothed in fine hairs spreading from a central axis, so that the whole reads as a feather rather than a simple bristle. The pattern appears on the persistent styles of some seed heads and on the pappus hairs that carry daisy-family seeds on the wind. It is a matter of arrangement rather than of hairiness alone: a hairy surface with no central axis is pubescent, not plumose.
