The central female reproductive structure of a flower, composed of three parts: the stigma (pollen-receiving surface), the style (connecting tube), and the ovary (containing ovules). May be formed from one or more fused carpels.

Etymology

From Latin pistillum, meaning "pestle."

Example

The pistil at the center of the lily catches pollen on its sticky stigma.
