    peltatum

    /pel-TAH-tum/
    🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

A leaf shape epithet for a blade whose stalk joins at or near the middle of the underside rather than at the margin, so the leaf is held out like a small round shield. The arrangement usually gives a circular or umbrella-like outline. Appears as peltatus (masculine), peltata (feminine), or peltatum (neuter).

    Etymology

From Latin peltatus, meaning "shield-shaped," from pelta (a small shield).

    Example

“Podophyllum peltatum (mayapple) takes the neuter ending, its umbrella-like leaves carried on stalks set into the centre of the blade.”
