Nematode
/NEM-uh-tohd/🦠 Diseases●● Intermediate
Also known as: roundworm, eelworm
A group of microscopic, unsegmented roundworms found in virtually all soils. While many nematode species are beneficial (decomposers, predators of pest organisms), plant-parasitic nematodes feed on roots, causing stunting, wilting, nutrient deficiency symptoms, and root galls or lesions. Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are among the most damaging, creating characteristic swellings on roots. Management includes crop rotation, resistant cultivars, and soil solarisation.
Etymology
Greek nema (thread) + -oid (resembling)
Example
“The swollen, knotty roots on these tomato plants indicate a root-knot nematode infestation.”
