Also known as: grey mould, gray mold, Botrytis cinerea
A fungal disease caused by Botrytis cinerea, one of the most common plant pathogens. It appears as a fuzzy grey mould on flowers, fruits, leaves, and stems, particularly in cool, humid, or poorly ventilated conditions. Botrytis typically enters through wounds, dead tissue, or aging flower petals. Good air circulation, prompt deadheading, and avoiding overhead watering are key preventive measures. In winemaking, noble rot (controlled Botrytis) is deliberately cultivated for dessert wines.
Etymology
Greek botrys (cluster of grapes)
Example
“Remove fading peony flowers promptly to prevent botrytis grey mould from developing in the wet petals.”
