In a papilionaceous (pea-type) flower, the two lowermost petals that are fused or held together to form a boat-shaped structure enclosing the stamens and pistil. The keel sits below the two lateral wing petals and the large upper banner petal.

From Old Norse kjolr, the bottom timber of a boat.
