Internode

/IN-ter-nohd/
🔬 Anatomy●● Intermediate

The portion of a plant stem located between two adjacent nodes. Internode length varies by species and growing conditions — etiolated plants grown in low light develop abnormally long internodes.

Etymology

From Latin inter (between) + nodus (knot).

Example

Leggy, stretched internodes indicate the plant is not receiving enough light.
