    Also known as: hybrid vigor

Heterosis (hybrid vigor) is the genetic basis for F1 hybrid breeding. When two genetically diverse inbred lines are crossed, the F1 offspring often outperform both parents in growth rate, disease resistance, and yield. This phenomenon explains why F1 hybrid tomatoes like Sungold and Early Girl are more resilient than heirloom varieties. The effect diminishes in subsequent generations (F2, F3).
