    F1 Hybrid

    🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

Also known as: first filial hybrid

F1 (first filial) hybrids are created by crossing two stable inbred parent lines. The resulting plants show hybrid vigor (heterosis): more vigorous growth, higher yields, and better disease resistance than either parent. Early Girl and Sungold tomatoes are F1 hybrids. Seeds saved from F1 plants will not breed true—the second generation (F2) segregates into highly variable plants.

    Etymology

F1 from Latin filius (son), first filial generation
