    Edulis

    /EH-dyoo-lis/
    🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

    Also known as: edule

An epithet meaning the plant or a significant part of it is edible and fit for human consumption. Closely synonymous with esculentus, but edulis tends to appear more on plants whose edibility is the single most notable characteristic — often starchy roots, edible seeds, or nutritious fruits. Appears as edulis (both genders).

    Etymology

From Latin edulis, meaning "eatable" or "edible," from edere (to eat).

    Example

Araucaria araucana (monkey puzzle), whose large seeds are a staple food of the Mapuche people, Phytolacca edulis, and the edible-stemmed Gunnera edulis all carry this frankly informative epithet.
