    /DUL-sis/
    🏷️ Taxonomy Basic

    Also known as: dulce

A taste epithet indicating the plant or its fruit, sap, root, or seed has a notably sweet flavor, distinguishing it from bitter (amarus) or sour relatives. It is one of the oldest and most direct epithets for culinary plants and signals pleasant edibility. Appears as dulcis (both genders).

    Etymology

From Latin dulcis, meaning "sweet," "pleasant," or "agreeable," related to Greek glykys (sweet).

    Example

Prunus dulcis (almond), Glycyrrhiza glabra (liquorice — named from Greek for sweet root), and Cichorium intybus var. sativum all owe recognition of their sweetness to this epithet or its relatives.
