🌲 Arboriculture Basic

Also known as: raising, crown lifting

Crown raising involves removing or shortening the lowest branches of a tree to provide vertical clearance for pedestrians, vehicles, buildings, signs, or sight lines. The height of raise should be specified in the pruning prescription. As a general guideline, the live crown should remain at least two-thirds of the tree's total height after raising.

Etymology

From Latin corona (crown) + Old English ræran (to lift up)

Example

Crown raising to 14 feet provided the required clearance over the pedestrian walkway.
