Crown Cleaning
/kroun KLEE-ning/🌲 Arboriculture● Basic
Also known as: deadwooding, dead-wooding
Crown cleaning is the most basic and frequently performed pruning operation. It involves removing dead, dying, diseased, weakly attached, and broken branches from the crown. Unlike other pruning types, crown cleaning does not change the tree's size, shape, or density. It reduces hazard potential, improves aesthetics, and prevents the spread of disease. No live branch removal guidelines apply since only dead/compromised wood is removed.
Etymology
From Latin corona (crown) + Old English clǣne (pure, clear)
Example
“Annual crown cleaning removed the deadwood that could become a hazard during winter storms.”
