    Crenatus

    /kreh-NAH-tus/
    🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

    Also known as: crenata, crenatum

A leaf margin epithet describing rounded, shallow teeth along the leaf edge — more wave-like and gentle than the sharp serrations of serratus. A crenate margin looks scalloped rather than saw-toothed. Appears as crenatus (masculine), crenata (feminine), or crenatum (neuter).

    Etymology

From Latin crenatus, meaning "notched" or "scalloped," from crena (a notch, cleft).

    Example

Glechoma hederacea (ground ivy) has the characteristic rounded, scalloped crenate margin that distinguishes it from sharply toothed relatives, and Primula crenata has the same gentle, wave-edged leaf outline.
