Arenarius

/a-ren-AH-ree-us/
🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

Also known as: arenaria, arenarium

A soil and habitat epithet indicating the plant naturally grows in sandy soils — coastal sand dunes, inland sandy heaths, or sandy riverbanks. Sand-loving plants with this epithet are typically drought-tolerant and extremely well-drained-soil specialists. Appears as arenarius (masculine), arenaria (feminine), or arenarium (neuter).

Etymology

From Latin arenarius, meaning "of sand," from arena (sand, sandy place).

Example

Arenaria montana (mountain sandwort) and Ammophila arenaria (marram grass) are classic sand-specialist plants, the latter being one of the most important stabilisers of coastal dunes in Europe.
