Overview

Xerophyllum spp. is a genus of two evergreen perennials in the false-hellebore family, native to North America: X. tenax of western mountains and X. asphodeloides of the eastern United States. Both grow from a stout woody rhizome that produces a dense tussock of narrow, wiry, grass-like leaves 12 to 36 inches (30 to 90 cm) long, with finely toothed margins that feel rough to the touch. In bloom, a single leafless stalk rises 2 to 5 ft (60 to 150 cm) and carries a crowded raceme of many small, creamy-white, six-tepaled flowers that open from the base upward over several weeks. The basal leaf tuft persists through winter, turning olive to gray-green. Flowering is irregular: individual plants of X. tenax may bloom only once every three to seven years, often more freely in the season after a fire opens the canopy. The genus is slow to establish, resents root disturbance, and is difficult to raise from seed or to transplant from the wild, which limits its use in cultivation despite a wide native range.

Native Range

Xerophyllum spp. is endemic to North America. X. tenax occurs from British Columbia south to California and east to Montana and Wyoming, on montane slopes and in open conifer forest, while X. asphodeloides grows in pine barrens and dry Appalachian woodlands from New Jersey south to Georgia and Tennessee.

Suggested Uses

Xerophyllum spp. is grown in native-plant gardens, montane and woodland plantings, and meadow restorations within its range. The persistent leaf tufts add texture along dry banks and open slopes. Its slow establishment and erratic flowering make it a long-term planting rather than a quick display.

How to Identify

Look for a dense, rounded clump of stiff, narrow leaves to 36 inches (90 cm) long, grass-like but arising from a woody rhizome rather than in true grass fashion. Leaf margins are minutely toothed and abrasive. A flowering plant sends up one tall, bare stalk topped by a club-shaped to elongated cluster of small white flowers, unlike the leafy flowering stems of true grasses or lilies.

Xerophyllum spp. grows in full sun to light shade on lean, sharply drained, acidic soils with a pH near 5.0 to 6.5, including rocky and sandy ground. Established clumps tolerate summer drought and need little or no supplemental water. The genus resents rich soil, standing moisture, and root disturbance, and transplants establish slowly. Propagation is most reliable from fresh seed, though seedlings may take five to seven years to reach flowering size. Once settled, plants are long-lived and need minimal care beyond removal of spent flower stalks.

Pruning

Pruning is limited to cutting away the spent flowering stalk after the seed has shed and removing dead outer leaves to tidy the clump. The evergreen foliage is otherwise left intact, since cutting it back weakens the plant. No routine shearing is needed.
