Woollsia pungens
snow wreath
Overview
Woollsia pungens is an erect to spreading evergreen shrub 0.3-1.5 m (12-59 in) tall, with wiry, densely leafy branches. The small, stiff, crowded leaves are 5-15 mm (0.2-0.6 in) long, broad-based and tapering to a sharp point, giving the foliage a prickly feel. Tubular, five-lobed flowers, white and ageing to pink, are clustered tightly at the branch tips and resemble small wreaths of bloom, opening over a long season from autumn through winter and into spring. The flowers are faintly scented and are followed by small dry capsules. It grows in coastal and montane heath, sandstone woodland, and swamp margins on sandy, acidic, low-nutrient soils, often in open, exposed sites. The sharp-tipped leaves make the plant uncomfortable to handle, and it is intolerant of rich soils and heavy feeding, which can quickly kill the roots.
Native Range
Native to eastern Australia, mainly the coastal and montane heaths of New South Wales and southern Queensland.Suggested Uses
Used in native and heath gardens, coastal plantings, and rockeries on sandy, acidic soils. Suited to low-nutrient bush gardens and as a flowering filler among other heathland shrubs. Also grown in containers with a free-draining, low-phosphorus mix.How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in full sun to light shade on free-draining sandy, acidic soils low in nutrients, with a pH of about 4.5-6.0. As a heath-family plant it is sensitive to phosphorus and rich fertilisers, which can damage or kill the roots. Light watering supports establishment; settled plants tolerate dry periods but not prolonged drought in hot positions. Waterlogged or alkaline soils are poorly tolerated. It withstands light to moderate frost. A surface mulch of leaf litter suits its shallow roots better than manure-based composts.Pruning
Light tip pruning after the main flowering flush keeps the shrub compact and encourages branching. Hard pruning into old leafless wood is avoided, as the plant reshoots unreliably from bare stems. Spent flower heads need no removal.Pruning Schedule
