Woollsia spp.
snow wreath
Overview
Woollsia spp. is a monotypic genus in the heath family, represented by the single Australian species W. pungens, an erect, wiry evergreen shrub of eastern Australian heathland. Plants grow 0.3-1.5 m (1-5 ft) tall, with stiff stems closely clothed in small, hard, sharply pointed leaves that spread or clasp the stem and give the foliage a prickly feel. Short tubular flowers about 1 cm (0.4 in) long crowd the branch tips in dense heads, opening white and often ageing to pink, with the petal lobes fringed at the margin. Flowering runs mainly from autumn through winter into spring, a longer season than many heathland shrubs. The species grows in nutrient-poor, sandy, acidic soils on heath, in open woodland, and on sandstone, where it tolerates wind and periodic dryness. Like many members of the heath family, it depends on specialised root fungi to take up nutrients from poor soils and is sensitive to high phosphorus. Growth is upright and twiggy, and the plant keeps its foliage year-round. Frost tolerance is limited to light frosts, and wet, fertile, or heavy soils are poorly tolerated.
Native Range
W. pungens is native to eastern Australia, in coastal and near-coastal New South Wales and southeastern Queensland. It grows on sandy, acidic, low-nutrient soils in heath, open woodland, and on sandstone outcrops. The species is common in the wallum and sandstone heaths of the region.Suggested Uses
Used in native, heath, and coastal gardens on sandy acid soils, and in low informal plantings and containers of free-draining mix. The long flowering season suits cottage-style and pollinator plantings. Also grown for cut stems of the dense flower heads. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering is concentrated from autumn through winter into spring, roughly March to September in eastern Australia, a longer season than many heath shrubs. Dense heads of white tubular flowers open at the branch tips and often flush pink as they age. Scattered flowers can appear outside the main season in mild spots.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Plants grow in full sun to light shade on sandy, gritty, acidic, low-nutrient soils with sharp drainage. They tolerate wind, coastal exposure, and periodic dryness once established, while wet, heavy, or fertile soils cause root problems and decline. Feeding is light and low in phosphorus, as the heath family is sensitive to phosphorus and relies on root fungi for nutrient uptake. Light frost is tolerated, but hard freezes damage the foliage. A mulch of coarse sand or gravel keeps the crown dry. Few pests trouble it, though root rot follows poor drainage or overwatering.Pruning
Light tip pruning after the main flowering keeps plants compact and bushy. Plants resprout from semi-hardwood, but cutting into old bare wood regrows poorly. A gentle annual trim maintains shape without removing the next season's flowering wood.Container Growing
