Overview

Veratrum spp. is a genus of about 30 robust perennials in the family Melanthiaceae, native to wet meadows, damp woodland, and mountain slopes across the cool temperate Northern Hemisphere. From thick rhizomes the plants send up stout, unbranched leafy stems 2-7 ft (0.6-2.1 m) tall, clothed in large, strongly pleated oval leaves 6-14 inches (15-35 cm) long that fold like a fan. Branched terminal panicles 1-2 ft (30-60 cm) long carry many small, star-shaped flowers in green, white, yellow, or deep maroon, depending on species. Plants grow slowly, often taking several years to reach flowering size, and may not bloom every season. All parts contain steroidal alkaloids that are poisonous to people and livestock, affecting the heart and nervous system if eaten, and the young shoots have been mistaken for edible plants with fatal results. The pleated foliage is the main feature for most of the season, since flowering is intermittent. Veratrum spp. grows in damp, cool sites but is slow to establish and slow to recover if disturbed.

Native Range

Native across the cool temperate and subarctic Northern Hemisphere, including North America, Europe, and northern and eastern Asia, in wet meadows, seeps, and open mountain woodland.

Suggested Uses

Grown in bog gardens, rain gardens, and damp woodland and meadow plantings for the large pleated leaves and tall summer flower spikes. The pleated foliage anchors moist shade and waterside plantings. Because every part is poisonous, the genus is placed away from areas grazed by livestock or used for food crops.

How to Identify

Recognized by stout upright stems set with large, broadly oval leaves that are deeply pleated along parallel veins, folding like a hand fan. The branched flower clusters hold many small six-parted star flowers in green, white, yellow, or maroon. The pleated leaves and tall, single, leafy stem separate Veratrum spp. from true hellebores Helleborus spp. and from gentians, which lack the fan-folded foliage.

Grow in full sun to part shade in deep, fertile, reliably moist to wet soil; streamsides, bog gardens, and damp meadows suit the genus. Plants are slow to establish from seed or division and resent disturbance once settled, so they are left in place for years. Most species are hardy in USDA zones 3-7 and die back to the rhizome each winter. Dry soil scorches the large leaves and stunts growth. All parts are poisonous if eaten, carrying steroidal alkaloids that affect the heart and nervous system. Watering through dry spells keeps the foliage intact into late summer.

Pruning

Faded flower stems are cut down after bloom, or left to ripen seed, and the whole plant is cut back as it yellows in autumn. Little other pruning is needed because the stems are unbranched and slow-growing. Old clumps are left undivided, since plants recover slowly from disturbance.
