Thuidium delicatulum
delicate fern moss
North America and temperate Northern Hemisphere
Overview
Thuidium delicatulum is a mat-forming moss of the family Thuidiaceae, widespread across North America and much of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. It forms loose, spreading carpets of bright to yellowish-green shoots, each finely and repeatedly branched in a flat, three-times-pinnate pattern that gives the plant a feathery, fern-like outline. Individual shoots run 1-4 inches (2.5-10 cm) long and lie close to the surface, with tiny overlapping leaves under 0.04 inch (1 mm) long along the stems and branches. As a non-vascular plant it has no true roots, flowers, or seeds; it anchors by thread-like rhizoids and reproduces by spores released from cylindrical capsules raised on reddish stalks, mainly in autumn and winter. It grows over moist soil, rotting logs, stone, and tree bases in shaded woodland, wetland margins, and stream banks. It depends on steady humidity and shade, drying and shrinking during drought and reviving when moisture returns, but it does not tolerate prolonged sun or dry exposure.
Native Range
Native across North America from Canada south through the eastern and central United States to Mexico, with a range extending into Central and South America, Europe, and Asia. It occupies shaded, humid habitats on soil, logs, rock, and tree bases.Suggested Uses
Used as a groundcover and accent in shade and moss gardens, in terrariums and vivariums, and in naturalistic plantings over soil, logs, and stone. It also stabilizes humus on shaded banks where conditions stay moist. How to Identify

Bloom Information
This moss does not flower. Spores develop inside cylindrical capsules held on slender reddish stalks, ripening and shedding mainly from autumn through winter. New green growth expands in the moist conditions of spring and fall.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in part to full shade on consistently moist, acidic substrates such as humus, rotting wood, soil, and shaded rock. It needs high humidity and shelter from direct sun and wind, which dry the mats and turn them brown. It withstands winter cold across a wide range, from roughly USDA zones 3-9, and regreens after seasonal drying once moisture returns. No fertilizer is required, and it takes hold most readily on undisturbed, low-nutrient surfaces where taller plants do not crowd it. Watering with low-mineral water during dry spells keeps the mats green. Foot traffic, raking, and herbicide drift damage the shallow growth.Pruning
No pruning is needed for this low, mat-forming moss. Loose or damaged sections can be lifted away by hand, and the same fragments can be pressed onto moist soil or wood to start new patches. Clearing fallen leaves keeps the mats exposed to light and air.Container Growing
