Thelymitra ixioides
spotted sun-orchid
Eastern and southern Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia
Overview
Thelymitra ixioides is a terrestrial orchid growing from an underground tuber, producing a single erect flowering stem 20-60 cm (8-24 in) tall. A solitary basal leaf, 8-20 cm (3-8 in) long, is lance-shaped to linear, channelled and somewhat fleshy with a reddish base. Each stem carries 2-10 flowers measuring 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 in) across, ranging from pale to deep blue and occasionally pink or white, with darker blue or black spots on the upper segments. Unlike many orchids the flowers lack an enlarged labellum; all six segments are similar in size and colour, giving the open bloom a star-like symmetry. The flowers open only in warm sunny conditions and stay closed on overcast days. The central column is topped by a tuft of white to yellow hair-like structures. Flowering occurs in spring, after which the plant dies back to its tuber and remains dormant through summer and autumn. It grows in free-draining sandy or gravelly soils in heathland, open forest, and woodland. Because it depends on specific soil fungi, it is difficult to transplant or cultivate and rarely persists outside its natural habitat.
Native Range
Native to eastern and southern Australia, including Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia, with populations also in New Zealand and New Caledonia. It occupies coastal and inland heath, woodland, and sclerophyll forest.Suggested Uses
Grown by terrestrial-orchid enthusiasts in pots of free-draining mix and in native restoration plantings within its natural range. Its seasonal dormancy suits collections that can give a dry summer rest rather than mixed borders. How to Identify
