Tasmannia insipida
brush pepperbush
Overview
Tasmannia insipida is an evergreen rainforest shrub of the Winteraceae family, growing 3-13 feet (1-4 m) tall with an upright, often multi-stemmed form. The glossy green leaves are oval to lance-shaped, 2.5-6 inches (6-15 cm) long, smooth-edged, and aromatic, releasing a peppery scent when crushed, like other members of the genus. Small cream to greenish-white flowers with a few narrow petals open in spring and summer; plants are male or female, so both are needed for fruit. Female plants carry clusters of fleshy berries that ripen purple-black and have a mild peppery taste, milder than the related mountain pepper. Native to the rainforests of eastern Australia, from Queensland through New South Wales, it grows in the shaded, humid understory on moist, humus-rich soils. It needs shade, shelter, and steady moisture and does not tolerate drought, strong sun, or hard frost. The shrub forms a soft, leafy screen in a shaded position but is slow to fruit and depends on having both sexes present. Growth is moderate, with aromatic foliage and dark berries as the main seasonal features.
Native Range
Native to the rainforests of eastern Australia, from southern Queensland through New South Wales. It grows in the shaded, humid understory of moist forest on rich, well-structured soils.Suggested Uses
Used in shaded and rainforest gardens, bush-food plantings, and sheltered courtyards on moist soil. Suited to a humid, frost-protected position, with male and female plants grown together for berries, spaced 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 m) apart. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Small cream to greenish-white flowers open in spring and summer, roughly September to December, scattered among the leaves. Male and female flowers grow on separate plants, so only female plants set the dark berries that follow. Fruiting depends on a nearby male plant for pollination.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in part to deep shade on moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in a sheltered, humid position. It needs steady moisture and does not tolerate drought, drying winds, or strong direct sun. Regular watering keeps the soil evenly moist, and a layer of leaf-litter mulch suits its rainforest origins. It is sensitive to hard frost and grows reliably only in mild, frost-protected sites. Both male and female plants are needed for the female to fruit. Light feeding with a balanced fertilizer supports steady growth.Pruning
A light trim after flowering or fruiting keeps the shrub bushy and shapely. It tolerates pruning to control size in a shaded border. Removing dead or weak stems at the base keeps growth open and healthy.Container Growing
