Strophostyles spp. is a small genus of about three to eight species of trailing and twining annual and perennial legumes in the family Fabaceae, native to North America. Known as wild bean or fuzzy bean, the plants produce slender, prostrate to climbing stems 2-8 feet (0.6-2.4 m) long with three-parted leaves, the leaflets sometimes lobed. Pea-like flowers in pink, lavender, or greenish tones are clustered on long stalks, with a keel petal that curves sharply upward in the manner typical of the group. Narrow cylindrical pods 1-3.5 inches (2.5-9 cm) long follow and split to release seeds, which in some species are covered with short hairs. Strophostyles spp. grows in full sun on dry, sandy, well-drained soils in dunes, sandy prairies, open woodland, riverbanks, and disturbed ground. As a legume it fixes nitrogen and colonizes poor, loose soils. Annual species die after seeding, while perennials persist from a rootstock.
