Schoenus apogon
common bog-rush
Overview
Schoenus apogon is a small tufted sedge growing 8-16 inches (20-40 cm) tall, forming dense clumps of slender, wiry stems and narrow grass-like leaves. The slender stems carry small, loose clusters of reddish-brown spikelets near their tips through spring and summer. As a member of the sedge family rather than a true grass, it has solid, often triangular stems and inconspicuous wind-pollinated flowers. Native to damp habitats across Australia and New Zealand, it grows in seepage lines, swamp margins, wet grassland, and the edges of streams and drainage channels, favoring soils that stay moist or seasonally wet. It tolerates poor, waterlogged ground that many plants cannot, but needs reliable moisture and declines in dry conditions. The tuft is low and slender in texture, blending into wetland vegetation rather than standing apart. Growth is modest, and plants spread slowly by short rhizomes and by seed, forming colonies in suitable damp ground. The reddish spikelets and narrow clumping habit give a subtle seasonal change as the seed ripens.
Native Range
Native to Australia and New Zealand, where it grows in seasonally wet and boggy ground including swamp edges, seepage lines, and damp grassland. It is widespread across temperate and subtropical regions.Suggested Uses
Used in rain gardens, pond and stream margins, bog gardens, and wetland revegetation. Suited to damp and seasonally wet sites, planted in groups 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) apart for a low sedge cover. How to Identify

Width/Spread6" - 1'
Reaches mature size in approximately 2 years
Bloom Information
Spikelets form through spring and summer, roughly October to January. Loose clusters of small reddish-brown spikelets sit near the stem tips and release wind-borne pollen. The seed heads persist for a time before shedding seed into the surrounding damp soil.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in full sun to part shade on moist to wet soils, including boggy, poorly drained, and seasonally flooded ground. Reliable moisture is needed throughout the year, and the plant declines if the soil dries out for long. It tolerates low-nutrient and waterlogged conditions without feeding. In ponds and rain gardens it grows as a marginal plant in shallow water or saturated soil. It is frost-tolerant and persists through cold winters in temperate areas. Spread is slow, by short rhizomes and self-sown seed.Pruning
No regular pruning is needed. Old stems and spent seed heads can be trimmed back in late winter to tidy the clump before new growth. Dividing congested tufts in spring renews vigor and controls size.Container Growing
