Overview

Schoenus spp. is a genus of grass-like perennial sedges in the family Cyperaceae, with around 100 species, most numerous in Australia and also occurring in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Known as bog-rushes, plants form dense tufts or tussocks of slender, wiry stems and leaves 8-40 inches (20-100 cm) tall, often dark green to reddish. The leaves are narrow and channelled, and the stems are round or slightly flattened. Small flowers are grouped into dark brown to blackish clusters near the stem tips in spring and summer, wind-pollinated and without petals. Plants grow in permanently wet ground, including fens, bogs, seepage slopes, and wet heath, and many species favor lime-rich or peaty soils. The wiry tufts spread slowly to form clumps. In drier soil the foliage thins and growth slows.

Native Range

Found across Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, with the greatest diversity in Australia. S. nigricans, the black bog-rush, grows in fens and wet calcareous ground across Europe and North America. Plants occupy bogs, fens, seepage areas, and wet heath.

Suggested Uses

Grown at pond and stream margins, in bog gardens, and in rain gardens, spaced 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart. The wiry tufts add vertical texture to wet plantings and stabilize damp soil. Plants are unsuited to dry borders and general container culture.

How to Identify

Recognized by dense tufts of slender, wiry stems 8-40 inches (20-100 cm) tall topped with dark brown to blackish flower clusters. The narrow channelled leaves and dark clusters, together with a wetland habit, separate Schoenus spp. from grasses and from paler-flowered sedges.

Plants grow in full sun to light shade in permanently moist to wet soil, including peaty and lime-rich ground. They depend on steady moisture and decline where soil dries out. Many species suit the margins of ponds and bog gardens, while some Australian species tolerate seasonal drying. Hardiness varies across the genus, from frost-tender Australian species to S. nigricans, which withstands cold winters. The tufts need little care once established in suitable wet ground. Division in spring renews older clumps.

Pruning

Cut old foliage back to the base in late winter before new growth begins, or leave it to weather naturally. Remove flower stems after seeding to limit self-sowing. No other pruning is needed.
