Rosulabryum billardierei
Southern Hemisphere (incl. Australia, New Zealand)
Overview
Rosulabryum billardierei is a moss that forms low tufts or loose cushions of upright shoots, typically 0.4-1.6 inches (1-4 cm) tall. The shoots are crowded with leaves toward the tips, giving a rosette-like appearance when moist. Individual leaves are 0.08-0.2 inch (2-5 mm) long, broadly lance-shaped to spoon-shaped, with a pointed tip and a midrib (costa) that extends into a short hair-point. Leaves are green to yellow-green when moist and become twisted and contracted when dry. As with all mosses, the plant has no flowers, roots, or vascular tissue; it anchors by thread-like rhizoids and absorbs water across its surface. Reproduction is by spores, released from capsules borne on reddish stalks (setae) 0.4-1.2 inches (1-3 cm) tall; the capsules are pendulous and pear-shaped. It grows on soil, rock, and the bases of trees in moist, sheltered sites. Growth is slow, with colonies expanding gradually over several seasons. The plant dries and becomes dormant in prolonged drought, reviving after rain. It does not persist in deep, permanent shade combined with constant wetness.
Native Range
Widespread in the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, New Zealand, southern South America, and southern Africa. In Australia it occurs in all states, growing on soil, rock, and tree bases in moist forest, woodland, and sheltered urban sites from the coast to the mountains.Suggested Uses
Used in moss gardens, terrariums, and between paving in shaded, moist areas as a low ground cover. Establishes on damp soil, rock, and logs in shaded landscape settings. Not suited to hot, dry, or fully exposed sites. How to Identify

Bloom Information
As a moss, Rosulabryum billardierei does not flower. Spore capsules develop mainly through the cooler, moister months and ripen in spring. Capsule production depends on adequate moisture and varies from year to year.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Rosulabryum billardierei grows in moist, sheltered positions on soil, rock, or bark in dappled shade to part sun. It absorbs water across its surface, so consistent humidity and occasional misting sustain growth where it is cultivated for terrariums or moss gardens. The colony dries and becomes dormant during drought, greening again after rain. It needs no fertiliser and is damaged by strong, direct summer sun on exposed surfaces. Stagnant, constantly wet conditions cause decay of the lower shoots.Pruning
No pruning is required. Overgrown or damaged patches can be trimmed or lifted and replaced. Fallen leaves and debris are cleared from the surface, as a heavy litter layer smothers the shoots.Container Growing
