Overview
Rhynchostegium confertum is a pleurocarpous moss that forms thin, somewhat glossy, green to yellow-green patches over the surfaces it grows on. The slender stems creep and branch irregularly, 0.4-1.2 inches (1-3 cm) long, set with loosely spaced, egg-shaped leaves that taper to a slender point and bear a single midrib reaching about halfway up the leaf. The shoots are not strongly flattened, giving an untidy rather than feathery look despite the common name. Capsules form readily and are egg-shaped, slightly curved, held on a smooth reddish seta 0.4-0.8 inch (1-2 cm) tall, and capped by a long-beaked lid that gives the genus its name. Spores ripen mainly in winter and early spring. Growth is slow, with patches enlarging by creeping stems. The moss tolerates short dry spells, curling its leaves and reviving when rewetted, but needs shade and steady humidity to persist. It does not grow in full sun or in dry, exposed positions.
Native Range
Common across lowland temperate Europe, extending into North Africa and western Asia. It grows on shaded surfaces such as tree bases and trunks, rotting logs, stumps, walls, stones, and bare soil in woodland, hedge banks, and gardens, mostly at low elevations.Suggested Uses
Grown on shaded stone, logs, and bare soil in moss gardens, terraria, and woodland plantings as a low green cover, pressed onto damp surfaces where it spreads. Suited to shaded, humid, neutral to basic sites rather than open, sunny ground. It establishes on hard surfaces where many plants cannot root. How to Identify

Bloom Information
As a moss, Rhynchostegium confertum does not flower. It reproduces by spores from curved, beak-lidded capsules that form freely and ripen mainly in winter and early spring, alongside vegetative spread by creeping, branching stems.

Care Guide
Grows on shaded, consistently humid surfaces including bark, dead wood, stone, and bare soil, on neutral to slightly basic substrates. In shaded gardens and moss plantings it needs steady moisture and screening from direct sun, which dries and browns the patches. It tolerates brief drying by curling its leaves and reviving when rewetted, though extended drought kills it. No feeding is needed, and it spreads naturally onto suitable damp surfaces. Faster mosses and algae can overgrow it in very wet, low-airflow sites. Propagation is by pressing stem fragments onto a moist, shaded surface.Pruning
No pruning is required. Loose or overgrown patches can be lifted and thinned by hand at any season without harming regrowth. Removed fragments root on moist surfaces, so thinnings serve as propagation material.Container Growing
