Overview
Rhynchostegium spp. is a genus of pleurocarpous mosses in the family Brachytheciaceae, distributed across temperate and tropical regions worldwide. Plants form thin to spreading green mats over soil, rock, decaying wood, and tree bases, with creeping, irregularly branched stems 1-4 in (2.5-10 cm) long. The leaves are ovate to lance-shaped, 1-3 mm long, with a single midrib reaching part way up the blade and a gradually tapered tip. Mats range from glossy yellow-green to mid-green depending on moisture and light. Reproduction is by spores: inclined, cylindric capsules form on smooth reddish stalks 0.4-1 in (10-25 mm) tall, each capped by a long-beaked lid that gives the genus its name. Species occupy consistently moist, shaded sites and decline where surfaces dry out for extended periods. Growth occurs whenever moisture and mild temperatures coincide, slowing in drought and hard frost. As non-vascular plants, they absorb water directly through their surfaces rather than through roots and anchor by thread-like rhizoids.
Native Range
Rhynchostegium spp. has a near-cosmopolitan distribution, with species across Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Australasia. Members grow in moist woodlands, stream banks, and shaded rock in both temperate and tropical zones.Suggested Uses

Rhynchostegium spp. establishes on moist, shaded substrates including soil, humus, rotting logs, and stone, and depends on steady ambient moisture rather than soil fertility. It tolerates deep shade and short dry spells but browns and contracts during prolonged drought, recovering when moisture returns. Slightly acidic to neutral conditions, roughly pH 5.0-7.0, suit most species. No fertiliser or irrigation is needed where humidity is reliable. Foot traffic and accumulated leaf litter are the main causes of decline in cultivated settings.Pruning
