Rhinotropis californica
California milkwort
Overview
Rhinotropis californica, formerly Polygala californica, is a low evergreen perennial that spreads from a woody base to form mats 4-16 inches (10-40 cm) tall and 8-18 inches (20-45 cm) wide. The stems are slender and trailing to ascending, bearing oval, leathery, dark green leaves 0.5-1.5 inches (1.5-4 cm) long. From April to July it produces rose-pink to purple flowers about 0.5 inch (1.2 cm) long; each flower has two petal-like lateral sepals and a fringed lower keel typical of the milkwort family. The flowers are followed by small two-chambered capsules. R. californica grows in coastal scrub, chaparral, and open woodland from sea level to about 3,300 feet (1,000 m) in California and southwestern Oregon. It tolerates summer drought and lean soils but is sensitive to hard frost and waterlogged ground. Native bees visit the flowers and trip the keel to reach the pollen. Plants are slow to establish from seed and may take two to three seasons to reach flowering size. The low, spreading habit suits rock gardens and bank plantings, though the small stature limits its presence in larger borders.
Native Range
Rhinotropis californica is native to the California Floristic Province, ranging from southwestern Oregon south through the California Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada foothills. It grows in coastal scrub, chaparral, and open mixed-evergreen woodland.Suggested Uses
Used in rock gardens, on dry banks, and in California native and pollinator plantings. It is spaced 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart as a low groundcover in well-drained sites. The trailing habit suits planting along path edges and in raised beds. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Rhinotropis californica grows in full sun to partial shade with 4-8 hours of light and needs sharply drained loam, sand, or rocky soil. Established plants tolerate low water and summer drought, matching the dry-summer climate of their native range. Soil pH from 6.0 to 7.5 suits the species, and waterlogged ground causes root rot. The plant is semi-hardy, tolerating brief frost but suffering damage below about 20°F (-7°C). It is slow to establish and recovers poorly from root disturbance once planted.Pruning
Little pruning is needed beyond removing dead stems in late winter. Rhinotropis californica tolerates light tip-pinching after flowering to keep the mat dense. It does not regrow strongly from bare woody stems, so cutting into old growth is avoided.Pruning Schedule
