Posidonia australis
fibre-ball weed
Temperate coastal southern Australia
Overview
Posidonia australis is a marine flowering plant, one of the seagrasses, that forms extensive underwater meadows on sandy and muddy seabeds in shallow coastal waters. It grows from thick, creeping rhizomes anchored in the sediment, sending up tufts of flat, ribbon-like leaves 12-32 inches (30-80 cm) long and about 0.4-0.6 inch (10-15 mm) wide. The leaves are bright to dark green and grow in clusters from the rhizome. Small flowers are produced underwater within the leaf bases and are pollinated by water-borne pollen rather than wind or insects. Old leaf fibres break down and roll in the surf into fibrous balls that wash up on beaches, the source of the name fibre-ball weed. The species grows along the temperate southern coast of Australia, where its meadows stabilise the seabed, store carbon, and shelter fish and other marine life. Posidonia meadows grow very slowly and recover poorly once damaged, so they are protected in many areas. It is a wild marine plant rather than a garden subject, and gardeners encounter it mainly as the fibrous balls and leaf wrack washed up along the shore.
Native Range
Posidonia australis is native to the temperate coastal waters of southern Australia, from Western Australia across South Australia to New South Wales. It grows in sheltered bays, estuaries, and coastal embayments on sand and mud in clear, shallow seawater.Suggested Uses
Has no garden cultivation use, as it grows only submerged in coastal seawater. Beach-cast fibre balls and leaf wrack can be used as a compost ingredient or soil amendment. In its marine setting it stabilises the seabed and shelters fish nurseries and seahorses. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs underwater, mainly in late winter and spring, with small flowers hidden among the leaf bases. Pollen is carried through the water rather than by wind or insects. The flowers are rarely seen, and most spread is by slow growth of the rhizome.
