Polygala vulgaris
common milkwort
Overview
Polygala vulgaris is a low-growing perennial in the family Polygalaceae, reaching 4-14 inches (10-35 cm) tall and 4-10 inches (10-25 cm) wide. Slender, wiry stems trail at the base before turning upward, carrying alternate, untoothed leaves 0.2-1.4 inches (5-35 mm) long; the lower leaves are smaller and more rounded than the narrow, pointed upper ones. From May to September the stems bear loose racemes of 10-40 flowers, each 0.2-0.3 inch (5-8 mm) long, with two enlarged petal-like inner sepals (wings) flanking a fringed keel petal. Flower colour ranges from gentian-blue through pink and mauve to white, often varying within a single population. The fruit is a flattened, two-chambered capsule. The species grows in neutral to calcareous grassland, heath, dune, and cliff-top turf across much of Europe, kept open by grazing or low fertility. It withstands low-nutrient and seasonally dry ground but is slow to re-establish after root disturbance and declines where taller vegetation shades it out, so it is scarce on fertilised or abandoned grassland. Plants are deep-rooted and long-lived, supporting grassland bees and other insects as part of species-rich meadow communities.
Native Range
Native to Europe, ranging from Britain and Scandinavia south to Spain, Italy, and the Balkans and east into western Russia. It occupies unimproved grassland, heath, dune slacks, and open cliff tops, usually on neutral to lime-rich soils.Suggested Uses
Grown in wildflower meadows, chalk and limestone grassland restoration, green roofs, and rock or gravel gardens. Its low stature suits the front of sunny, low-fertility plantings where taller plants will not overtop it.How to Identify
