Overview
Mnium spp. is a genus of mosses in the family Mniaceae, comprising roughly 10 to 12 species distributed across temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with a few reaching mountains farther south. Plants form low turfs or loose mats of erect leafy shoots 0.4-1.6 inches (1-4 cm) tall arising from creeping underground stems. The shoots carry broad, oval to tongue-shaped leaves 0.1-0.3 inch (3-8 mm) long, translucent green and often edged by a rim of narrow cells with paired teeth along the margin. As bryophytes, plants lack true roots, flowers, and internal water-conducting vessels, anchoring instead by hair-like rhizoids and absorbing moisture across the leaf surface. Reproduction is by spores released from nodding, egg-shaped capsules raised on slender reddish stalks. Colonies spread slowly over moist, shaded soil, rotting logs, and rock in forests and along stream banks. The genus depends on steady humidity and shrivels in dry, exposed sites, recovering when moisture returns.
