Mirbelia spp.
mirbelia
Overview
Mirbelia spp. is a genus of evergreen pea-flowered shrubs in the legume family (Fabaceae), endemic to Australia, with most of its roughly two dozen species in the south-west and east of the continent. Plants are small, wiry, heath-like shrubs 1-6 feet (0.3-1.8 m) tall, with stiff, often crowded or prickly small leaves adapted to dry, nutrient-poor soils. In spring and early summer the branches carry typical pea flowers, with a broad upper standard petal and a keel, in shades of purple, mauve, pink, and orange-yellow, often with contrasting markings. The flowers are followed by small inflated pods holding a few seeds. As legumes, the plants fix nitrogen through root nodules and grow on poor sandy and gravelly soils where many shrubs falter. Several species occur in fire-prone heath and sclerophyll communities and regenerate from seed or rootstock after fire. The genus needs full sun, sharp drainage, and a frost-free or near frost-free climate, and grows poorly on heavy, wet, or limy soils. Most species are slow-growing and long-lived once established.
Native Range
Mirbelia spp. is endemic to Australia, with centers of diversity in south-western Western Australia and in eastern Australia. The species grow in heathland, shrubland, and dry sclerophyll forest on sandy or gravelly soils.Suggested Uses
Grown in native, water-wise, and coastal gardens in Australia and other mild climates for spring pea-flower color on poor, sandy soils. The genus suits heath and shrubland plantings, rockeries, and dry banks. As nitrogen-fixing legumes, the plants also contribute to low-nutrient native plantings. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Plants grow in full sun on sharply drained sandy or gravelly soils that are low in nutrients, reflecting their heathland origins. As nitrogen-fixing legumes, they tolerate poor ground and need little or no added fertilizer; phosphorus-rich feeds in particular can damage them. The genus is drought-tolerant once established but frost-tender to only marginally hardy, so it suits warm-temperate and Mediterranean climates. Heavy clay, wet ground, and limy soils lead to poor growth and root problems. Plants are raised from scarified seed or cuttings and grow slowly. Light tip-pruning keeps young plants bushy.Pruning
Pruning is light. Tips are trimmed after flowering to keep plants compact and bushy, cutting only into leafy growth rather than bare old wood, which is slow to reshoot. Hard renovation pruning is poorly tolerated.Pruning Schedule
