Overview
Lunularia cruciata is a thallose liverwort in the family Lunulariaceae, forming flat, branching green ribbons that spread across damp surfaces. The thallus is 0.1-0.4 inch (3-10 mm) wide and a few centimetres long, forking repeatedly to build overlapping mats, with a glossy upper surface marked by faint polygonal air chambers and pale, scale-like rhizoids anchoring the underside. It reproduces mainly by vegetative gemmae carried in crescent- or half-moon-shaped cups set on the thallus surface, a feature that names the plant; rain splash disperses the gemmae to start new colonies. Sexual reproduction is infrequent outside its native range and produces stalked, umbrella-like structures. Originally Mediterranean, the species now occurs worldwide as a colonist of greenhouses, plant pots, nursery benches, shaded paving, and moist, shaded soil. It grows quickly on consistently damp, shaded surfaces but dries to a dormant crust in drought and is checked by direct sun and free-draining conditions. In containers and glasshouses it is treated as a weed, because its mats compete with seedlings for water and surface air and shed gemmae spread it between pots. It is non-vascular, lacks true roots, leaves, and flowers, and absorbs water directly across the thallus.
Native Range
Native to the Mediterranean region of southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. It has since spread worldwide through the horticultural trade and now grows on damp, shaded ground, paving, and in greenhouses across temperate and subtropical regions.Suggested Uses
Rarely grown deliberately; it appears as a spontaneous colonist of damp horticultural surfaces and is studied as an example of a thallose liverwort with crescent gemma cups. In bryophyte collections and terraria it is kept on damp substrate in shade. In most nurseries and greenhouses it is managed as a surface weed rather than a planted subject. How to Identify
