Overview

Lolium spp. is a genus of about 8 cool-season grasses in the family Poaceae, known as ryegrasses, native to Europe, temperate Asia, and North Africa. Plants form tufts of narrow, glossy, bright green blades 0.1-0.3 inch (3-6 mm) wide and grow 1-3 feet (30-90 cm) tall when flowering. The genus includes both annual species such as L. multiflorum and perennials such as L. perenne, so habit ranges from short-lived to persistent clumps. Flowers form a flattened, two-ranked spike 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) long, with spikelets set edgewise against the stem, a feature that separates Lolium spp. from related grasses. Ryegrasses germinate quickly and establish faster than many turf and forage grasses, which is why they are sown across temperate regions for lawns, pasture, and erosion control. The genus grows in cool, moist conditions and fertile soil, and growth slows or browns during summer heat and drought. L. temulentum, called darnel, can carry a seed-borne fungus that produces toxic alkaloids. Several ryegrasses have naturalized far beyond their native range and can crowd out sown species or become weedy in cultivated ground.

How to Identify

Identify Lolium spp. by the flattened flower spike in which the spikelets sit edgewise, with their narrow edge pressed against the central stem, unlike the broadside arrangement of most grasses. Leaf blades are narrow, glossy on the underside, and bright green, with young leaves folded rather than rolled in the shoot. L. multiflorum bears awned spikelets, while L. perenne is awnless.
