Leymus condensatus
giant wild rye
Overview
Leymus condensatus is a large, clump-forming perennial grass growing 4-9 feet (1.2-2.7 m) tall in flower, with stout, erect stems rising from short rhizomes. The flat blades are 0.4-0.8 inch (1-2 cm) wide and up to 2 feet (60 cm) long, ranging from green to blue-grey, and arch outward from the base. Dense, narrow flower spikes 6-14 inches (15-35 cm) long stand well above the foliage in late spring and summer, turning straw-coloured as the seed ripens. The plant forms broad clumps that slowly widen at the base, anchoring loose and rocky soils. It grows on dry slopes, canyon walls, streambanks, and coastal bluffs in California and northern Mexico. Established plants are deep-rooted and tolerate drought, heat, and lean soils, going partly dormant in the driest part of summer. A limitation in small gardens is its eventual size, since a mature clump can reach several feet across and crowd out nearby low plants.
Native Range
Leymus condensatus is native to California and northern Baja California, Mexico, where it grows on dry slopes, canyons, coastal bluffs, and the edges of streams and washes. It ranges from the coast into the foothills below about 5,000 feet (1,500 m).Suggested Uses
Grown as a large accent or screen in native, dry, and habitat gardens, and used for erosion control on banks and slopes, spaced 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 m) apart. Suited to coastal and inland sites with full sun and room for a wide clump. The seed heads draw birds and the clumps shelter small wildlife. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Leymus condensatus grows in full sun to light shade and a wide range of soils, from sand to clay, provided drainage is reasonable. It establishes from seed or division and grows quickly once its deep roots form. Established plants tolerate drought, heat, and seasonal dryness, needing little or no summer water in their native range. Some summer water keeps the foliage greener, while dry conditions bring partial dormancy and browning. Clumps can be cut back hard in late winter to refresh the foliage before new spring growth.Pruning
Clumps are cut back to a few inches above the ground in late winter, before new growth begins, to remove old blades and spent flower stems. No other pruning is needed. Dividing large clumps in autumn or early spring controls their spread and renews growth.Pruning Schedule
