Overview
Kindbergia praelonga, formerly Eurhynchium praelongum, is a pleurocarpous moss of the family Brachytheciaceae that forms loose, spreading green wefts over soil, leaf litter, rotting wood, and the bases of trees. The creeping main stems are regularly pinnately branched, giving a feather-like outline, with shoots commonly 1-4 inches (2-10 cm) long trailing through their substrate. It bears two leaf forms: the stem leaves are broadly triangular and abruptly narrowed to a slender point, while the branch leaves are smaller and narrower, all pale to mid green and somewhat glossy when moist. As a moss it has no roots, flowers, or seeds; it anchors by thread-like rhizoids and disperses by spores released from curved capsules raised on reddish stalks, mainly in autumn and winter. It also spreads by fragmentation, with detached shoots rooting where they settle. The species grows densely in damp shade and thins in dry, exposed positions, browning during drought before reviving after rain. It is a frequent moss of woodland and gardens across its range, colonizing shaded lawns, borders, and paving where competition from vascular plants is low.
Native Range
Native across Europe, Macaronesia, North Africa, and western Asia, where it is a widespread moss of woodland floors, hedge banks, and shaded cultivated ground. It also occurs in western North America, where its status as native or introduced is debated.Suggested Uses
Grown deliberately in shade and woodland gardens as a soft green groundcover over soil and rotting logs, and used in moss gardens and terrarium plantings. It establishes on shaded paving, walls, and the ground beneath trees where other groundcovers fail. In naturalistic plantings it knits leaf litter and bare soil into a continuous green carpet. How to Identify

Care Guide
Growth is densest in moist, shaded conditions on mildly acid to neutral substrates, including bare soil, leaf litter, decaying wood, and the thatch of shaded lawns. The moss draws moisture and nutrients directly through its shoots rather than from roots, so it depends on humid air and a damp surface. In dry, sunny spots the mats brown and shrink, recovering after rainfall returns. It needs no feeding and tolerates the low light beneath shrubs and trees where grasses grow poorly. Where it is unwanted in lawn turf, raking and improved drainage reduce it, while shade and compaction encourage its return. No winter protection is required, as the moss stays green and active through cold, damp weather.Container Growing
