Overview
Huperzia lucidula is an evergreen clubmoss, a low spore-bearing plant rather than a flowering one, growing 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) tall from creeping, branching stems that root along the forest floor. The stems are clothed in shiny, dark green, lance-shaped leaves about 0.3-0.4 inch (8-10 mm) long, arranged in several ranks and often slightly toothed, with the tips of the shoots turning upward. It reproduces by spores borne in kidney-shaped sporangia in the upper leaf axils, and also spreads vegetatively by small bud-like gemmae that detach and root nearby. New growth shows annual constrictions along the stems, marking each season. It is native to cool, moist, shaded woodlands across eastern North America, where it grows on acidic, humus-rich soils, often near streams and on shaded slopes. The plant depends on cool, damp, deeply shaded conditions and acidic soil, and it does not tolerate sun, drought, or disturbance. Because it relies on specific soil fungi, it is difficult to transplant and rarely survives in gardens, persisting mainly in intact woodland.
Native Range
Native to eastern North America, from eastern Canada south through the Appalachian Mountains and Midwest to Georgia. It grows on the floor of cool, moist, acidic woodlands, on shaded slopes, and near streams.Suggested Uses
Used in shaded native and woodland plantings, fern and moss gardens, and naturalistic settings with cool, moist, acidic soil. It suits deep shade where little else grows as a low evergreen groundcover. Its specialized needs make it suited to intact woodland and restoration sites rather than ordinary beds. How to Identify

Bloom Information
This clubmoss does not flower or set seed. Spores are released from kidney-shaped sporangia in the upper leaf axils, mostly in late summer and fall. The plant also spreads through the year by detachable bud-like gemmae near the shoot tips.
