Houstonia pusilla
tiny bluet
Central and Southeastern United States
Overview
Houstonia pusilla is a tiny winter annual of the madder family, standing just 1-3 inches (2.5-8 cm) tall on slender, often branching stems. The small oval to spoon-shaped leaves, under 0.5 inch (1.2 cm) long, form a low rosette and a few opposite pairs along the stem. In early spring the plant opens single four-petaled flowers about 0.25 inch (6 mm) across, pale blue to violet or lavender with a darker reddish to purple eye at the center; the petals form a short tube. Plants often grow in loose colonies that color bare ground pale blue. After flowering, small capsules ripen and split to release minute seeds, and the plant dies as warm weather arrives. Native to open, sunny, often sandy or thin rocky ground across the central and southeastern United States, it appears in lawns, glades, fields, and roadside banks. It germinates in fall, overwinters as a small rosette, blooms briefly in early spring, sets seed, and completes its life in a single season. It needs full sun and bare, low-competition ground and is intolerant of dense turf and shade. The small flowers draw early bees and other pollinators. Bloom lasts only a few weeks before the plant withers.

Care Guide
Grow in full sun on bare, low-fertility sandy or thin rocky soil with little competition. The plant fails in dense turf, rich soil, or shade. It is grown from seed sown on open ground in fall, germinating to overwinter as a small rosette. No feeding or watering is needed beyond natural rainfall. Plants reseed where the ground stays open and undisturbed. Mowing is delayed until after seed set where it grows in lawns.Pruning
No pruning is needed on this tiny annual. In lawns, mowing is delayed until seed has set to allow self-sowing. Spent plants disappear on their own as the season warms.Container Growing
